Mumbaikars are familiar with Alibaug and Madh but ask them about Murud and you draw blank stares.
Murud is a quiet hideaway in Raigad, about 42 km from Alibaug and a beach too. Murud has an
interesting history. It was once the stronghold of Siddis in the service of Bahamani Sultan of
Ahmednagar whose fort they seized and the region flourished under Malik Amber. The Siddis ultimately
acknowledged British power with Nawab Sidi Muhammad Kham II Sidi Ahmad Khan being the last ruler
of the fort that was never conquered despite being attacked by Mughals, Marathas and the British. If
the fort is impressive so is the temple of Lord Dattatreya. The beach is secluded and the gently waving
palm fronds contribute to a sense of peace and quiet. It is the perfect weekend getaway from the noisy
crowds of Mumbai.
How to get there
Murud is situated 149 km from Mumbai. One can take a taxi or travel by bus. However, the better option is to hire self driven bikes in Mumbai from bikehired.com in Mumbai and drive off. One can have a stop at Alibaug. One can set out and reach Vadhkhal and then drive onwards to Alibaug and stop a bit at the beach to stretch your legs and have a bite of something to eat before proceeding to Revdanda, Kashid and Mazgaon from where Murud is a short distance. The Edapally Panvel Highway could be a better choice if you are inclined to get there fast. An alternative is to go to Lonavala via Rasayani, enjoy a day’s stay and then drive on to Murud. It takes about 4 hours via this route.
Things to see in Murud
The old Fort and the temple of Dattatreya are worth watching places. And there is the Ahmedganj Palace spread over 45 acres, once the home of the royal Nawabs. The Garambi Dam and Kasa Fort are also worth a visit. If you love surfing and parasailing then you have to go to Kashid, about 30 km away. The Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is about 12 km from Kashid, a place worthy of a visit if you have your own vehicle. Drive down to Phansad Dam for a picnic. Stay for a couple of days and you can drive around at leisure to explore the Khokari Tombs, Kude Buddhist Caves, the Sawat Kada Waterfalls and the Kortai Fort.
